Holiday photographers appear to be divided into two groups, those that shoot everyone and everything in sight, or those that either forget to take their camera or don’t bring it out when they should.
Capturing your holiday on a digital camera means there are now many ways to reminisce over your holiday. From digital frames to regular photos, or maybe a giant canvas print for the wall, or my favourite a photo book.
We have put together 5 simple tips to inspire you to get out and take photos while on holidays, as well as some ideas on what to shoot.
Include instant reminders
Take photographs, not only of landmarks, but the activities you do while on holiday to be an instant reminder of where you were and what you were doing during your trip.
Sometimes the people we meet on holidays leave a lasting impression on us and make great character photographs. Bus trips, boat trips etc all make great excuses to pull the camera out, even if it’s just to photograph the mode of transportation.
Try something different
Try shooting different and unusual angles like shooting a famous building from a low angle to accentuate it’s height.
See how the light is playing on your subject and try shooting from a different angle. Don’t be afraid to break the rules by shooting towards the sun.
Look for trees, arches or window frames nearby that you may be able to use to frame your subject.
It’s often good to place people in your photograph to give scale to the scene or building you are shooting.
Compose your photograph in such a way that there is a centre of interest, quite often this means that the object or scene your photographing needs to be framed using the rule of thirds.
Don’t leave the Hotel without it!
It seems almost silly to say this, however your camera has no use in the hotel room other than to be stolen.
Modern digital cameras are so small that you can easily carry a camera with you at all times. You may want to consider the bag you carry the camera in, maybe you don’t need a big bag that carries a spare battery, charger and other accessories. Consider a smaller bag that snugly fits the camera.
Finally grab the camera and take it with you, everywhere you go. You never know what might pop up.
Capture the culture
Take photos of the people and in the situations that reflect the culture and differences of the country or community you are visiting.
There aren’t too many rules here, if it intrigues you the shoot it. Signs on buildings, doorways, the mode of transport, the way people dress are just a few ideas of things that represent the culture of the area you’re in.
When you visit the local bazaar or market, make it an opportunity to pull the camera out and shoot everything in sight. If you feel self conscious about using your camera, just simply hold the camera casually and point and shoot away without looking at your LCD screen. You’ll be amazed at what you get and you can always delete the bad ones.
Don’t forget to take photos of the new friends you make on your holiday.
Print them As Soon As Possible
Print your photos while the memories are still fresh in your mind.
There are many different ways you can show off your holiday to your friends. You can do regular digital prints that you can then put into a photo album, but you may want to consider some of these new ways of showcasing your holiday.
- Photo books, are a great new way of printing your images. Consider it the modern photo album, your friends will truly be impressed!
- Collage prints, these are large prints that can contain as few or as many images as you want arranged on to the print and ready to be framed and hung.
- Canvas Prints, of your favourite images available in a huge array of sizes and shapes that come to you stretched and ready to hang.
- Gifts, Cards and personalised stationery are just some of the other amazing things you can do with your photos.
Whatever you do, don’t do nothing and leave your images stuck in you computer!
